Here we will be filling in details of some of our team’s key members. We’re searching for decent photos of them, and getting together details of who they are and what they do on the team. Stay Tuned!

Phil Evenden

Crew Chief

Phil was born in South London, UK in 1960. In 1976 he joined the RAF as a dual trade apprentice and completed the training in airframe and engine maintenance in 1979. He served 27 years, working on Buccaneer, Jaguar, Hunter, F4J, and C130. During this time, he also taught for 4 years at the RAF Technical Training School and spent an additional 4 years writing maintenance schedules and doing technical investigation work.

During his instructor tour he became involved in the restoration and maintenance of privately owned ex-military aircraft (mainly Folland Gnat trainers). When he left the RAF, he moved into Warbirds full time. He’s been involved in restoring and maintaining Gnat, Jet Provost, Hunter, Venom, Piaton Provost, Skyraider, T6, Seafire 17 and Scout and Wasp helicopters. Currently, he is nearing completion of repairs to a Seafire that suffered a gear up landing in France a few years ago.

One lunchtime, during a brief chat with the collection’s owner, he (as he tells it) foolishly mentioned that he’d like to go and see the races at Reno someday. If only he’d known what a slippery slope lay ahead! A couple of days later the owner told him he had spoken to his friend Thom in Florida, who would welcome him to be part of his crew in on his Formula 1 team that year. In September 2009 he was “The Tailwheel Guy” and “International Relations” for Miss USA and Invictus when they won everything….and he got sucked in further.

From that point on, he has been part of Thom’s story in the Iskra and then Precious Metal. Thom asked him to take the post of Crew Chief in 2012, where he works to this day. While he feels he knows less about the airframe and engine than the crew in the US, he excels at taking the coordinating role to ensure we’re ready on time, every time. His motto is, “You gotta be in it to win it!”.
